One of the first main rules is to treat every fire arm as if it was a loaded gun. This means that every time you pick up a gun or are handed one from a friend treat it as if you knew it was loaded. Even if you know it is not loaded. If you follow this rule it will create a safer environment for yourself and everyone around you.

Keeping you guns safety on until you are ready to fire your gun is another. There has been many instances where a person has forgot to engage the safety and shot themselves. Would you want this to happen to you? Do not turn your safety into the off position unless you intend on shoot a designated target, whether it be a piece of paper of that 12 point buck you have been waiting on for your whole life.
Keeping your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to shoot is the last of these main points of safety. Many people will flinch without knowing it and that is all it takes to set off your fire arm. Make sure that your gun is pointed in the direction of your target, disengage the safety, then place your finger around the trigger when you are ready to shoot what ever it is you are shooting at. Remembering these things will help you to safer around guns and eliminate the chances of shooting yourself or someone else.
