History of 22lr Ammunition
May 25, 2010 on 12:08 pm | By admin | In Recreation and Sports | Comments OffWe all have our hobbies. Some of them more interesting in history than others. One of the most interesting historically is that of firearms and their ammunition. Many date back to the civil war and before. One firearm specifically reaped in history, is anything associated with rifles. Well noted is the 22lr ammunition that was used in these rifles.
Anyone who is interested in firearms is usually aware of 22lr ammunition. This ammunition is a kind of caliber rimfire ammunition. This ammunition was originally manufactured to be used in revolvers, but shortly thereafter began to be used in rifles as well. This specific kind of ammunition dates back all the way to the 1800′s and is considered one of the oldest of its kind. To actually load a rifle that uses this particular ammunition, it would have to be used with black powder and a 29 grain bullet to achieve the best results. In 1887 the 22 long rifle was produced to better house the 22lr ammunition. The 22 long rifle boasted superior quality, longer overall rifle length, and higher energy. At this point, there was actually a vast difference in price between the 22 long and the 22 long rifle. This allowed those who were trying to watch their spending habits to still be able to save a few dollars. As time went on, that price difference ultimately disappeared. As time progressed, manufacturers ceased making anything that would ultimately house the 22lr ammunition. Also, with the popularity of semi automatic firearms (which do not house 22lr ammunition), the need for the rifle and the ammunition became less and less prominent. Though not completely obsolete, it is difficult to locate both the ammunition and the correct firearm to house the ammunition. It is considered a great find and collectors item, if one is in fact located.
Those who are interested in firearms and ammunition, are very serious about their “hobby”. They enjoy the history and facts that are usually attached to many of the old or hard to find pieces. The 22 long rifle and the 22lr ammunition are one of the oldest of its kind. Because of this, it peaks the interest of many tried and true firearm hobbyists and or collectors.
